“That their hearts might be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I say this in order that no one may delude you with persuasive argument.” Colossians 2:2-45
In my opinion Geico makes some of the best commercials on television. One of their more recent ones is the two Emperor Penguins that are walking to their ancestral breeding grounds. They trust the GPS in their phone to get them there. As the ad plays out, it turns out that they are lost. The GPS begins to recalculate and it informs them that they are 82 days away from their destination. They are going to miss the breeding. That would be funny, if it didn’t happen so often. Most of the time a GPS does a great job in getting you to your destination, but there are times that it doesn’t. Over the years I have seen ours take us in a five mile loop to bring us to a destination that was only a block away. Recently, I entered an address that I knew was correct, but it would not recognize it as a valid address. Frustration does not begin to describe the feeling of needing to get somewhere, and you have tried everything that you know to do, but cannot find your way. Worse of all, you have trusted in something to get you there, but it was wrong.
The Apostle Paul was familiar with people that were trying to mislead others. He was urging people to get their peace, assurance and wisdom from Christ. He was pleading with them to not fall for the lies of the world. He tells Timothy, “But evil men and imposters will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.” 2 Timothy 3:13. Paul wanted to make sure that young Timothy and the church did not get mislead in their lives. He wanted them to know that there were people that would try to get them to find peace, contentment and even salvation in someone else except Jesus. The Apostle is teaching them to stand firm in their faith and trust in Christ. Do not be misled.
This world today has many people and organizations that are leading people astray. “Follow us and you will have peace”, “let me tell you what you need to do with your life”, “take a vacation with us, and all of your troubles will float away”. Those are just some of the misleading lies that the world is spewing out. You will never find peace and contentment in your life outside of a relationship with Jesus. It is impossible. You will never find anyone else who can offer you salvation or the forgiveness of your sins either. Beloved Paul’s message is clear; don’t let anyone distract you from your relationship with Christ.
